Call to improve the streetscape and safety of Navan's Abbey Road

A call has been made for a public realm plan for Navan's Abbey Road to improve the streetscape and safety and to provide safe access to the Medieval Town Walls.

The Mayor of Navan, Cllr Eddie Fennessy, called for a Public Realm Plan for Abbey Road that will "make the roads and footpaths around the Medieval Town Walls safe and accessible by constructing wheelchair accessible footpaths, a pedestrian crossing and improved street lighting."

He said he wanted to see the streetscape improved on Abbey Road. "The road, footpaths, public lighting and the carpark in the area around the Medieval Town Walls site are in serious need of upgrading. We could also do with a pedestrian crossing on the street," he said.

"The council confirmed that they have a long-term plan for the street which is great news. However, I ask for that plan to be brought forward because wheelchair and buggy access on Abbey Road is pretty poor. Day service users from Prosper Meath, local residents and patrons of the car park would also benefit from the provision of a pedestrian crossing on the street."

At a recent meeting of Navan Municipal Council, Cllr Fennessy was told that the Navan Town Walls Conservation and Management Plan was published in 2022. '

"The development of a pocket park to present the conserved section of Navan Town Walls in the Council yard is a potential future project identified in the plan.

The provision of suitable means of safe public access to the site will form part of the future implementation of the Conservation Management Plan. As the yard is currently utilised for operational purposes by Navan MD, an alternative suitable site would have to be secured before any project could be advanced."
