Call to revive playground plans for Oldbridge receives unanimous support

Calls to deliver a new playground at the Battle of the Boyne site at Oldbridge is drawing increased support with one local councillor saying it could match Ardgillan Castle in Balbriggan.

Fianna Fail Cllr Wayne Harding received unanimous support for his motion to revisit the delivery of a playground at the historical location at October’s Laytown/Bettystown Municipal meeting.

Planning permission had been granted for a playground at Oldbridge a number of years ago but has now expired.

"The local authority and the OPW should revisit the proposed playground at Oldbridge as an amenity for the entire east coast and deliver a playground a long the lines of Ardgillan Castle.” he said. “For young families to be able to walk out to a super playground makes perfect sense and should be revisited,” he added.

Fine Gael Cllr Sharon Tolan said she was “fully supportive” of the motion.

"It should have happened a long time ago, when you look at the likes of Ardgillan and Malahide and the type of facilities and the draw they have, it is a no brainer.

"It's a fantastic facility and we can finish it off in a way that it can be something that absolutely everybody can enjoy. It would bring visitors to the area and that is what it is all about and enhancing their experience at Oldbridge."

Fianna Fail Cllr Tom Behan said: "It is something that we need to deliver , it will be a huge attraction that people will visit like Ardgillan and will increase in popularity as time goes on."

Cllr Elaine McGinty concurred with her fellow councillors in calling for the delivery of the amenity.

"I also really support this motion, it is really needed. As mentioned by other councillors taking in the likes of Ardgillan, it just really works. The Battle of the Boyne site has so much offer, this would be a fantastic addition."
