Death of former council chairman, James Mangan

The death occurred this morning of James Mangan of Rathfeigh, Tara, a former chairman of Meath County Council.

A Fianna Fail member of the council for over 20 years, with an intermission after the 2004 election, he was chairman from 2002 to 2003. He died peacefully at Our Lady Of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.

A native of Doohoma, Co Mayo, he farmed at Riverstown, Rathfeigh, and was first elected to the county council in 1985, and was a member of the North Eastern Health Board, serving as vice chairman. He served as a director of Meath County Enterprise Board, Navan Enterprise Centre, and Navan Leisure Link.

Mr Mangan lost his seat by a narrow margin in the 2004 local elections, but was co-opted back onto the council when a vacancy arose in 2005, and served until 2009.

Predeceased by his wife, Jane Mulligan of Kiltale, he is survived by his son, Michael, and daughter, Deborah; grandchildren, James, Laura, Liam and Sarah; daughter-in-law, Teresa (Brooks), sister Margaret, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and his many good neighbours and friends.

Mr Mangan will be reposing at Ryan`s Funeral Home, Ashbourne, from 5pm to 7pm this Tuesday evening. Removal on Wednesday morning to The Church of The Immaculate Conception, Rathfeigh arriving for Funeral Mass at 11 am. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
