Kilskyre NS show real class in high-scoring encounter

BOYS DIV 5 FINAL

Often teams don't do themselves justice on big match days (nerves and all that) but that certainly didn't apply to Kilskrye at Pairc Tailteann on Sunday as they chalked up a resounding victory over Kill NS to claim the Boys' Div 5 title with a powerhouse display.

Kilskryre last won the football final in 2003 although they have enjoyed Cumann na mBunscoil success in hurling in more recent years. They also have former Meath footballer and soccer international Gillian Bennett as their mentor (along with Sinead Lemass) so the players can avail of planty of sound advice.

That advice and guidance was no doubt a factor in helping them carve out this big win. The black and ambers were already well on the way to doing just that at the interval when they led 4-6 to 1-1 with Sean Savage helping himself to two goals while Adam Harte and the impressive joint captain Sean Gilsenan also found the net.

In the second act Kilskrye continued to orchestrate sustained attacking moves - and further goals, this time superbly taken by Fionn Owens and James Lynam made doubly, doubly sure they went home with the silverware.

Kill NS to their great credit battle hard and then battled some more. They were hit hard by the concession of those opening four first-half goals from Kilskyre but they regrouped and fashioned one of their own to give them some hope. The enterprising Luke O'Malley passed to Jane Howley and she surged through the opposition defence before scoring a sensational goal.

In the second-half another well-constructed attack yielded a fine goal this time scored by Kill's joint-captain Joshua Kelly. Jim Hayes (who passed with vision and accuracy all game) along with joint-captain Daniel Smyth, Kelly and O'Malley also pointed for Kill NS but they needed more.

Kilskyre's firepower could be seen in the way eight players got on the scoresheet with Daire Beacroft, Adam Harte, Killian Connell, Charles Morton and Fionn Owens players who added points to the six goals the team bagged from a top-notch, high class, team display. When they needed to most Kilskyre NS produced a big performance.
