Curraha defend hat-trick of titles

Conditions at Fairyhouse for the annual Cumann na mBunscol Cross-Country Championships were wetter than expected meaning heavy going underfoot for all.

An unprecedented 61 schools and approximately 2,000 children took part in the races in the small, medium and large schools divisions.

In the small schools division Curraha successfully defended the three title haul they pulled off last year taking the top prize in the Girls under-11, Girls u-13 and Boys u-13 categories. In the Boys u-11 category it was Castletown who won the top prize.

The medium schools competition saw Bohermeen taking two shields in the Boys u-11 and Boys u-13 categories. In their first ever outing at the cross-country event Yellow Furze took the honours in the Girls u-13 competition. In the Girls u-11 category the top award was decided by a tie breaker with both Rathbeggan and Skryne finishing on 42 points. The finishing position of the fourth place athlete decided the winner and Rathbeggan’s 17th trumped Skryne’s 22nd.

Finally it was the turn of the largest schools in the county and Dunboyne started out this section with a convincing win in the u-11 Girls.

The u-11 Boys honours went to St Colmcille’s in Kells. The Boys and Girls u-13 spoils were both taken back to St Paul’s Ratoath with the girls registering the best score of the day seeing all four of their point scoring athletes finish in the top 10.
