Hunt claims gold in Athlone
ATHLETICS Meath athletes prominent on the podium at indoor championships
Tara Hunt was the toast of Bohermeen and Meath last weekend when she claimed gold at the Leinster Indoor Athletics Championships in Athlone IT arena.
The talented Hunt, who has been in outstanding form for a number of years, added to her medal haul by taking the u-14 800 metres title in sensational style.
Hunt won her heat in 2:24 to automatically secure her place in the final and despite having to wait several hours to contest her final the Bohermeen star showed no signs of of lethargy.
Hunt showed an experienced head on her young shoulders in the final to stay at the front of a very competitive field.
In the final of the four 200 metre laps she convincingly hit the front and took the gold in 2:22, a full two seconds faster than her heat winning time.
Hunt's sister Emma also qualified for the National finals with a fine bronze placing in the girls under-17 1500m.
TP Carberry Smith put in a fine run in the boys under-18 1500m posting PB but just missed out on the medals in fourth place.
CUSHINSTOWN AC
Cushinstown AC's Lee Callaghan put in some great jumps to claim the bronze medal in the under-19 Long Jump.
In the u-16 Shot Putt Isabella Lourens put in some great throws to come fourth. Kayla Grehan and Maria Traynor both put in a good performances in the u-14 High Jump Event.
Casper Cudden and Andrea Lourens both made the final eight of the u-15 Shot Putt with Cudden taking sixth place.
Robyn Weldon, Moya Grehan and Cian Deasy competed in the u-12 Long Jump. Deasy also put in a great performance in the 600m event. While Weldon was sixth in the u-12 High Jump. Kayla Grehan also jumped very well in the u-14 Long Jump.
Cian Rohan jumped brilliantly in the u-13 High Jump to claim a silver medal. Lucy Morrison also jumped very well in the Girls U13 High jump.
Cushinstown AC had five athletes competing in the 60m Hurdles and came home with two gold medals.
In the u-17 Hurdles Roisin Quinn ran brilliantly to claim the Gold medal while Peter Bellew also put in a great performance to also claim gold in the boys U17 Hurdles.
In the u-13 60m Hurdles Lucy Morrison put in a brilliant run coming second in her heat and missing out on the gold medal by just one thousandth of a second.
HALF MARATHON
Bohermeen Athletic Club will promote their annual half marathon next Sunday, 10th March in Bohermeen, commencing at 11am from the Community Centre.
The main sponsor this year and for the past number of years is the local based National and International company McNally Logistics to which the club extends its sincere gratitude and to all its many supporting sponsors who have stood by the event over many years, to name a few Sheer Motion, Fyffes, Meade Potato company, Codam, JM food services, NGP plastics, Radical Runner, URBO drinks, Custom Bathrooms and the Tile Shop.
This year’s event will see over 1500 runners taking part, making it one of the largest athletic road races in the region, as well as huge numbers taking part the event has grown both in popularity and quality in terms of top class athletes taking part, this year former European indoor 400 mts double gold medalist David Gillick is taking part.
The event has its race HQ at Bohermeen community centre and the race starts sharp at 11am just outside the home of the late Sonny Bennett on the Newline.
Sonny was an outstanding club man who was on the winning Bohermeen Meath NACAI half marathon championship team in 1973 along with Vincent and Colm Rennicks.
The route takes in Neilstown-Newline the Boyerstown road, Athboy road, Ongenstown. There will be a traffic management plan in operation will local access coordinated.
Next Sunday's race is also the 50th running of the Rennicks Cup originally a cross country race until the year of the foot and mouth in 2001 when it changed direction and continues as a very success full road race.
The event is also the 47th running of the Fr Delaney Cup for the ladies section, it remembers the late Fr Delany PP of Bohermeen for 17 years.
As in keeping with its founding tradition, Sunday's event is also a Meath road championship for affiliated athletes of Meath athletic clubs.
