Moynalty emerged after a war of attrition in a bitterly cold Páirc Naomh Chiarán. This refixed Tailteann Shield fixture was played before a decent crowd who were treated to a full blooded contest.

Both teams entered the final group game unbeaten, having accounted for Clonard and Drumconrath. Moynalty raced into an early lead with Carnaross struggling to establish a foothold in proceedings.

The visitors demonstrated their early dominance on the scoreboard, which read 0-8 to 0-1 after 23minutes. Carnaross’ sole score came from the boot of full forward Paddy McDermott in this dormant period.

Eventually Carnaross emerged from their slumber and reeled off the next three points. Paddy McDermott accounted for all of the first half scores, three from play and one from a free. Moynalty were the happier of the two North Meath teams at half time as they lead by 0-8 to 0-4.

The second half began at a ferocious pace. Carnaross took the game to their underage counterparts as the crowd began to find their voice. Darragh O’Reilly pointed from play after an incisive run to narrow the gap to a goal.

Moynalty sat deep and looked to counter attack as the Hoops hunted in packs. Two fine points from distance for the men of Moynalty kept the home side at bay. As the game entered the third quarter, the tackling and intensity increased dramatically, both to the delight and dismay of the supporters.

The scoreboard was the only thing that wasn’t catching fire. Carnaross rearguard had tied up their opponents with John Reilly, Shane Yore and James O’Connor impressing. The turning point of the game came in the 50th minute when Paddy McDermott’s low driven penalty was expertly saved by goalkeeper Johnny Lynch.

Oisín Yore stepped up to convert the 45 that arose from the penalty and the gap was reduced to four. Darragh O’Reilly landed a free from out on the right hand side as the game entered its final minutes. There were five minutes of additional time but try as they might, Carnaross couldn’t find that elusive goal. Their wide tally of 10 proved costly over the hour.

Carnaross qualify second in the group where we will meet near-neighbours Cortown in the semi-final of the Tailteann Shield. Before that game, we will begin our league campaign with a trip to Castletown on March 15th.

Carnaross - Conor Kenny, Jack Roche, James O’Connor, John Reilly, Shane Yore, Ian Donoghue, Cormac Yore, Oisín Yore(0-1), Tomás Plunkett, Darragh O’Reilly(0-2), Dermot McGee, Dillon Fox, Oisín Farrelly, Paddy McDermott(0-5), Shane O’Reilly.
