Kilmainham suffer narrow defeat

TAILTEANN CUP

Dunderry... 0-12

Kilmainham 1-8

After their good win on Friday night in the Tailteann Cup Kilmainham welcomed Dunderry to Kilmainham for an 11am thrown today, Sunday.

This was Kilmainham's last round of the cup. It was a miserable morning for a game of football but the pitch held up well.

Dunderry started much brighter and were doing more of the early running with Kilmainham very slow to get into the match.

It was backs to the walls stuff for Kilmainham as wave after wave of attack from Dunderry had them firmly in the driving seat. The home side did muster two good goal chances that went abegging.

Despite having the wind, Kilmainham needlessly kicked away a lot of ball that gave the initiative to Dunderry.

Both teams were missing a host of regulars for various reasons and there was plenty of mistakes by both sides. Dunderry took a commanding lead and deserved their 0-8 to 0-3 advantage at half time having played against the wind.

It looked a tall order to turn this deficit around, especially as scores were hard to get in these conditions. Another point from Dunderry pushed them six points clear. Kilmainham refused to lie down.

This is when Kilmainham are at their best. A brilliant second half from the red and blacks saw them haul in the Dunderry lead as Kilmainham finished stronger. Dylan Morgan kicked a few good points and was unlucky not to find the Dunderry net after a brilliant move.

Unfortunately for Kilmainham his effort went over the Dunderry crossbar but they kept pushing for the goal and Mark Newman finished off a brilliant team move with a great low finish to the net.

The red and blacks got to within a point as Dunderry appeared to be out on their feet and Kilmainham had the momentum as the final whistle approached.

One last Kilmainham attack saw the ball land to Harry Newman.

His effort was partially blocked as the final time whistle blew much to Dunderry’s relief. A one-point win for the visitors.

Best for Kilmainham were Seanie Mahon, Padraig Caffrey, Mark Newman and Dylan Morgan.
