New Social Prescribing service launched in Trim
A NEW Social Prescribing service for south west Meath which aims to bridge the gap between healthcare and community resources was officially launched last week.
Funded by the HSE, the service is based in the Trim Family Resource Centre and spearheaded by Social Prescribing Link Worker, Kate Fitzpatrick.
"In essence, Social Prescribing a holistic approach to health and wellbeing that recognises the multifaceted nature of health issues," explained Kate.
"Instead of simply prescribing medication, Social Prescribing connects individuals with non-medical resources and support networks within their community to address underlying factors affecting their health. This can include activities such as exercise classes, art workshops, support groups, or volunteering opportunities.
"The benefits of Social Prescribing are manifold. By addressing social determinants of health, such as loneliness, unemployment, or lack of access to recreational facilities, it has the potential to improve mental health, reduce social isolation, and enhance overall quality of life. Moreover, it empowers individuals to take an active role in managing their health, fostering a sense of autonomy and self-efficacy."
Around 40 people attended the launch of the service, which took place at the Trim Castle Hotel on 20th March. Speakers included Justyna Doherty, coordinator of Trim Family Resource Centre; Juracy Antunes, Chairperson of the Board of Trim FRC; and Duana McArdle, Senior Health Promotion and Improvement Officer with the HSE.
Kate Fitzpatrick can be contacted at socialprescribing@trimfrc.ie (089) 2457745 for more information or to initiate the process. The social prescribing service is open to adults aged 18 and over.
