Classy Boyne CS display helps them claim Leinster crown
Trim school too strong for Kells opponents
Boyne CS, Trim...5-10
St Ciaran's CS, Kells...2-8
The ability to turn chances into scores was one of the main reasons why Boyne Community School, Trim chalked up a resounding victory over St Ciaran's, Kells in this Leinster first year boys Gaelic football final at Dunganny.
The victory meant Boyne CS secured the Br Hubert Shield - and the pleasing knowledge that they were Leinster champions.
Simon Cullen's report
The weather was favourable for both teams on the day and Dunganny was in excellent condition. Boyne C.S. settled quickly into the game and dictated the tempo early on, kicking the first three points of the game.
St. Ciaran’s CS were battling bravely and started kicking their own points over. The two teams traded points to leave Boyne CS two points up before Conor Fanning made two crucial saves to keep St. Ciarán’s goal-less.
From a place kick, Scott Williams stepped up to score the game’s opening goal to leave a score line of 1-5 to 0-3 at half time, in favour of Boyne C.S.
With the second-half underway, St. Ciarán’s C.S. now faced an uphill battle. With added points from Boyne CS thanks to dominance in the middle of the field from Conall O’Reilly and Scott Williams and some composure in the backs from Liam Fagan, the margin grew to 1-8 to 0-3.
Boyne continued to pull ahead thanks to the influential performance of George Golds after being moved to centre-half back and with the help of a goal apiece from Cathal Byrne and Shane Govern.
These goals, along with the impact from the bench with substitutes like Rhys King, Mícheál Moran and Scott O’Toole making a huge contribution helped to further cement Boyne’s dominance in the game.
St.Ciarán’s CS were not going down without a fight however and managed to score a couple of points, followed by two quick-fire goals of their own, to leave just 6 points between the two teams.
Coming into the last quarter of the game, Conor Fanning once again pulled off a crucial save to keep Ciarán’s at bay. The Boyne lads responded well to the continuing pressure from Ciarán’s and answered with an additional two goals of their own from Shane Govern and Rhys King.
After a highly entertaining and competitive match between the two sides, Boyne Community School walked away victorious with a final score line of 5-10 to 2-8.
Thanks to Mr. Brien, Mr. Cullen and Mr. Duffy for mentoring the team this year.
