Eddie sparkles in Spain and finishes ahead of the field

Eddie Maguire, who lives in Simonstown just outsside Navan, produced an outstanding display to finish ahead of the field in a European tournament for visually impaired golfers at the Costa Ballena Golf Course in Rota, Cadiz in Spain.

Eddie finished ahead of Magnus Grimberg (Sweden) and Lutz Friess (Germany).

Competitiors took part from a wide variety of countries including Sweden, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Canada, USA, England, Scotland, Argentina, Austria and, of course, Ireland.

All golfers in the tournament played with a guide and Eddie's was his grandson Luke Greevy.

Luke was described by Eddie "as the real hero of the tournament."

Eddie Maguire, who worked as a teacher, had a noted career as a Gaelic footballer and played for his native Mayo as well as Carlow and Meath.

He also played for Walterstown for a time and helped to turn the Blacks into one of the top club teams in the country.

Some years ago a work related accident resulted in Eddie a life-altering injury that severely affected his sight.

He turned to golf and has won titles in various parts of Europe - the latest in sunny Spain.

There has been talk that golf for blind and visually impaired players could be included at some point in the future in the Olympic Games.

Next up for Eddie and Luke is the British Open at Becon Woods Golf Club, Grantham in July.
