Bohermeen Athletic Club promoted the 38th Patrick Bell and Nicky Phillips Memorial Race and Walk on Saturday evening last. Both runners and walkers were treated to the usual warm weather. Also part of the evening was the traditional barbecue and live music by Davy Harrison.
The race drew just over 400 participants and as usual the high standard of top class contenders started out in the pleasant evening sunshine. The men’s event pitted the 2022 winner Ian Guiden from Clonliffe Harriers with last year’s winner Aaron O’Hanlon as well as Tadhg Donnelly of Drogheda & District.
With these three pushing hard behind the lead car, it was only in the final few hundred metres that the winner emerged - and that was the 2022 champion Ian Guiden who pushed on to claim top spot in the 38th running of the event with Donnelly and his team mate O’Hanlon third. Drogheda & District AC took the four-man team event. Brothers Pearse AC from Dublin won the Paddy Murtagh Cup for the scoring team of six.
The ladies race saw the 2016 winner Ciara Hickey from Brothers Pearse AC take the win from Freya Renton from Westport and Nichola Sheridan from Bohermeen in third place. Mullingar won the Mallon Cup with four to score from Newbridge and Bohermeen third. TP Smith Carberry won the Kevin McGeough Cup for the first Bohermeen man home. The inaugural Sonny Bennett Cup for the first Bohermeen lady home was presented to Nichola Sheridan by Sean Bennett of Neilstown, a brother of the late Sonny who was a former Bohermeen athlete and club officer and secretary of the Meath NACAI Co Board for most of the 1970s.
The organisers extend their thanks to sponsors John Hogan of Hogan Kitchens and Leahy’s Mace at Newgate. Sincere thanks is extended to everyone that made the event another great success.
