Primary Schools Finals: One giant leap for Lismullen

DIV 2 FINAL

Lismullen 4-10

St Paul's, Navan 3-3

Tom Gannon

After claiming the Shield last year Lismullen continued their remarkable progression in Cumann na mBunscol hurling by claiming the Div 2 crown with victory over a fancied St Paul's Navan side at Trim on Friday.

Both sides had chances in the early stages but neither were able to convert. That was until Lismullen’s captain, Luke Reynolds Donnelly knocked over a fantastic free from a huge distance out.

As the game continued, both sides were struggling to get a foothold on the contest. There were some fantastic battles around the middle of the park with Donnelly knocking over another score on the 15-minute marker.

Sadhbh McDaid responded for St Paul's before Evan Gribben burst through the Lismullen defence and polished the sliotar to the net to put St Paul's ahead.

Lismullen went in search of a response which they got courtesy of Aidan Chambers whose effort dipped just under the crossbar to edge Lismullen ahead once more.

Donnelly aimed at the St Paul's net and Aidan Tolster pulled off a fantastic save. However, Cathal Farrell was alive and alert as he got his hurl to the rebound and finished to the net.

St Paul’s Tom Kerrigan got the final score of the half as the teams went in at the break with Lismullen holding a 2-2 to 1-2 lead.

Donnelly got Lismullen’s tally underway in the second-half with another fantastic long-range free. Aidan Tolster was forced to pull off another fantastic save as he got his hurl to redirect Donnelly’s bullet shot over the bar.

Almost immediately after, St Paul’s went up the field and raised the green flag through Ronan Cromwell. Luke Reynolds rattled off another three great long-range efforts to bring his tally to seven points.

Cathal Farrell found a way through the St Paul's defence once more and secured his second goal as Lismullen began to open up a wide gap. Moments later Farrell once again bared down on St Paul's goal and bagged Lismullen’s fourth goal.

McDaid popped over her second score before Maedh McDermott, who battled brilliantly throughout, scored a fantastic goal to give St Paul's a slight bit of hope.

However, St Paul’s couldn’t make any more inroads and Lismullen held on for a fantastic win.
