Cllr Reilly receiving the chain of office from Leas Cathaoirleach, Mike Bray

Reilly elected chair of Kells Municipal Council

Fine Gael's Cllr Sarah Reilly, who topped the poll in Kells in the local elections, was elected Cathaoirleach of the Kells Municipal Council this morning (Tuesday) at the council's annual meeting.

Her election is part of a pact which will see Fine Gael and Fianna Fail share the position of chair and vice-chair over the next five years.

Fianna Fail's Cllr Mike Bray was elected vice chair.

Cllr Reilly was proposed by Cllr Sean Drew (FF), who described her as an excellent councillor.

“She was on Kells Town Council from 2009 and has been on this council since 2014. She received a fantastic vote and deserves this.”

Her nomination was seconded by Cllr Mike Bray who pointed that she had also been a poll topper in 2019.

Cllr Drew proposed Cllr Bray as Leas Cathaoirleach.

Cllr Reilly thanked her fellow councillors and paid tribute to the work of Paul McCabe the Fianna Fail councillor who lost his seat in the recent election. “He served us proud,” she said before also welcoming Sinn Fein’s Peter Caffrey. “I am delighted there is now a councillor from Oldcastle,” she said.

She thanked the council staff and particularly the outdoor staff who worked hard to keep all the councillors happy.
