He was elected with the support of fellow Independents, Cllr Gillian Toole and Clllr Brian Fitzgerald, as well as Cllr Caroline O'Reilly (Fianna Fail) and Fionnan Blake (Sinn Fein).

Cllr O Reilly was elected vice chair.

Cllr Killian paid tribute to Cllr Fitzgerald for his work as chair over the past year.

"My priority for the year ahead is road safety and reducing speed on our roads.

"I want to see the reduction of speed limits not just in every town and village but also on our county roads."

Cllr Killian said housing was also a priority.

"Housing need is continuing to increase. We need to an increase in the provision of social housing. Rather than having social housing controlled by central government I want to see it brought back to the county council, where we can set our own goals," he said.
