Three dead in road collisions... Woman and child killed in Mayo crash and man dies in single vehicle accident in Westmeath

It's been a day of tragedy on Irish roads with three people killed in two separate accidents in counties Mayo and Westmeath.

Gardaí are currently at scene of a single-vehicle fatal road traffic collision involving a car that occurred on the R395 at Teevrevagh, Castlepollard, Co Westmeath.

At approximately 6.40pm this evening, 2nd July 2024 Gardaí were alerted to a vehicle which had collided with a roadside ditch. The male driver of the car, aged in his 50s and sole occupant of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body remains at the scene, at this time.

The R395 at Teevrevagh, Castlepollard is currently closed with local diversions in place and a technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigators will be conducted tonight Tuesday 2nd July, 2024.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Teevrevagh area are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Earlier today, a woman and child were killed following a collision between a car and a lorry in Co Mayo.

The collision happened just before 6pm, on the N26 at Callow between Foxford and Swinford.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, and a passenger of the car, a female child, were fatally injured in the collision.

The driver of the lorry was taken to hospital with injuries that are understood to be non-life threatening.

The scene of the collision on the N26 (Foxford to Swinford Road) is currently closed, and local diversions are in place. A technical examination is being conducted by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N26 between Swinford and Foxford between 5.00pm and 6.00pm on Tuesday evening are asked to make this footage available to gardaí.
