Cortown finish on a high

Eastern Gaels 1-4

Cortown 3-15

Davy Rispin

Played in wet and miserable conditions in Gormanston on Tuesday evening last, the curtain came down on Eastern Gaels and Cortown’s respective League Division 10 campaign.

There was a 15-minute delay to the start with the security guard at the College unable to find keys to the playing field but when proceedings eventually commenced Cortown were comfortable winners over an ever-improving Eastern Gaels outfit.

The tone was set immediately from the off with Johnny McGearty slotting into the net following an enterprising run from Elliot Reilly with Cortown’s first attack of the night. The rampant visitors continued in that fashion with a hattrick of quickfire scores from Daragh Smith, Reilly and Luke Carberry.

Eastern Gaels continued to battle and added their first two points of the evening to narrow the deficit to four however the Faithful Kevin McGuinness steadied the Cortown ship with a 35-metre free.

Cortown then squandered a number of really presentable goalscoring opportunities but did tag on further points before the interval with McGuinnness, Aaron Smith and a brace from Reilly all ensuring a 1-8 to 0-34 half time cushion for Martin McGovern’s men.

Meath’s newest formed team got off to the perfect start at the beginning of the second half, goaling inside the first few minutes to narrow the gap to five. A further point would get them that bit closer but that’s as good as it got for the East Meath side with Cortown gradually reassuming a stranglehold on the tie.

Luca Brady and Conor Mulroe with 26th attempt of the night and substitute Davy Rispin added white flags for the North Meath team.

Then Carberry’s point attempt dropped short and into the net past the unfortunate Gaels netminder. McGearty, Conor Whelan and the raiding corner back Micky Costello remarkably added their names to the scoresheet late on.

There was still time for another green flag too with Mulroe latching onto a pinpoint pass from the ageless Micheal Reilly to finish to the back of the net and close out the scoring.
