Cllr wants better communication from council on road safety ahead of school return

An independent councillor has complained at a Meath County Council meeting that she had not received replies to four emails she had sent in relation to safety outside local schools.

Gillian Toole said she had asked for an update on school safety measures but had not received one.

She knew that the schools were on holiday until September and she knew there would be a sigh of relief in some quarters because “the problem has gone away" until then.

However, that situation was not acceptable and the management at Rathbeggan “would like a reply to our emails please”. The school was on the R147 and the parents were “distracted”. There would be children involved in Active Travel, walking and cycling to the schools on rural roads and she wanted to ensure they would be safe.

“We don’t want to read of a fatality on the R147”, she said.
