Oldcastle set for its biggest ever Show

The 83rd Oldcastle Agricultural Show is to return with a bang on Sunday, July 21 where Gilson Park will be a hub of excitement!

Substantial prize money is up for grabs on the day and entries are now being taken for 400-plus classes in cattle, sheep, horse, poultry and home industry competitions to be found on www.oldcastleshow.ie

The show on the Meath/Cavan border town boasts some of the largest rings in the country for working and ridden hunter horse and pony classes, and as always the equine field will boast huge variety with classes for broodmare and foal, in hand young stock, Connemara ponies, Welsh ponies and many more. The show also features a wonderful family riding pony ring which provides a range of fun filled events for two legged and four legged super stars!

Cattle classes include an inpressive variety of classes including, commercial cattle, pedigree limousin, charolais Hereford, Aberdeen Angus and Belgian blue classes. Not forgetting about the greatly anticipated young stock person classes which always provides an impressive display of young boys and girls showmanship skills.

Weighing of cattle classes runs from 8.30-10am, with cattle judging from 10am.

Oldcastle Show organisers are delighted to host the North East Irish Texel Club Championships, which is kindly sponsored by Univet. Purebred classes for Beltex, Blue Texel, Suffolk, Charollais classes also feature and they welcome sheep from everywhere! Shearers are also flocking to the show to take part in the sheep shearing junior and senior classes where they will provide a great display of both strength and skill.

'The Best Young Farmer Competition' is back again for this year’s show. The contest is open to 16 to 21-year-olds who will have to face a written general agricultural knowledge test before showing off their livestock knowledge and tractor skills. The ever popular 'Greatest Cockrel of Oldcastle' competition will cause plenty of feathers to be ruffled, while their new goat classes will also attract some bucks!

The automobile section will have a large range of vintage tractors and machinery including vintage threshers. From old to new, Oldcastle has it all!

The Show Hall will be a hive of activity as usual with every class catered for from turf, jam, cakes, photography, art, handwriting and decorated wellies and stones for all the children!

The Oldcastle Show Dog Show has classes for every madra from a purebred to a mongrel with lots of great prizes and rosettes to be won. ‘Little Miss’ Oldcastle and the ‘Young Bachelor’ of Oldcastle will also be crowned on the day. And you wouldn't want to miss the spectacular Birds of Prey which are flying into Oldcastle for the day.

The amazingly talented Joey Burns displays his sculpting wood art. With every type of trade stands there will be lots to see and do!

The Food and Craft village has lots of bits to nibble and try out! Free Children's entertainment on the day! Pet farm, face painting, obstacle courses, kids races and the Country Life Corner will be interesting to say the least! A great lineup of live music is guaranteed.
