The Kilmainham and Cortown players who took part in the historic game at Kilmainham.

A piece of football history is made at Kilmainham

Harry Newman, Kilmainham PRO

Saturday, 6th July 2024 will be a date to remember in Kilmainham as the club staged the first ever Mother’s and Other’s Gaelic football game on the local pitch.

It was day to remember for both young and old. With 41 players already registered, this team will go from strength to strength into the future under the brilliant management team of Mickey Newman, Richie Brady and Paul Farrelly. A big thank you to the lads for their dedication and fun training sessions.

This new team has given everyone involved in our club a huge lift as we look to drive our club forward.

The Ladies took on Cortown GFC in our first, historic match. A large crowd gathered to support both teams. These two clubs have strong connections off the field and a mutual respect on it.

There was plenty of red and black and green and yellow colour on display. There was great excitement on the day, great fun, super skills and laughter that could be heard all the way back to Cortown.

The kids enjoyed it as much as anyone else, cheering on every play. Seeing their parents play football for our club will be memories they will have forever. A big thank you to Cortown for coming over to play Kilmainham in our first match and for all the help that James Costello and Cortown GFC have given us in helping us to set up this team.

A big thank you also to Aisling Smith and Eimear Clarke for all their hard work behind the scenes with the administration and registration of the team and to Aisling and everyone who helped out to put on a spread after the game for both teams and supporters. A spread that would receive five Michelin stars in restaurant terms!

The ladies will play Bective in Bective on Tuesday 30th July at 7.30pm in their next match. We are always looking for new players to join. This team is a great outlet for ladies in our Community looking to get out and meet new people and to have a laugh in the process.
