'L' driver caught travelling at 173kmph on N3

Arrested for dangerous driving, car detained.

An unaccompanied learner driver was detained after being clocked travelling at a speed of more than 170kmph on the N3 at the weekend.

The driver was stopped by members attached to the Cavan Roads Policing Unit at 8pm on Sunday evening last, July 28, within hours of multiple fatalities being reported on Irish roads, including several in the north east of the country.

The detection was made as part of 'Operation Guide', with the car detected travelling at 173km/hr on a road that has a 100km limit.

When stopped by members of the Cavan RPU, gardaí discovered the driver was operating the vehicle on 'L' plates, and was also not accompanied by a full licenced driver.

They were arrested for dangerous driving, and the car itself was detained under the provisions of Sec41 Road Traffic Act (Clancy amendment).

The driver, when in custody, later refused a legal requirement to provide blood or urine sample.

They were subsequently charged to court and Fixed Charge Penalty Notices were issued for the driver not being accompanied by a fully licenced companion.

Ahead of the August Bank Holiday weekend, gardaí have asked motorists to be “mindful” of other road users.
