Laytown cycling scheme design welcomed

Local Fine Gael councillor and Cathaoirleach of Meath Co Council, Sharon Tolan has welcomed the new design of the Eastham Cycling and Pedestrian Scheme which was presented to councillors at the recent Laytown Bettystown Municipal District meeting.

“The first draft of this scheme, which was subject to a non-statutory public consultation, did not include any of the Bettystown Cross section,” said Tolan.

“The purpose of the scheme was to provide a safe route for pedestrians and cyclists from the Triton roundabout to the Whitefield roundabout,” she added.

“My submission and my contributions to the engineers were clear from the start, that I would not be supporting a scheme that did not address the safety issues at Bettystown Cross.

“I am delighted that they went back to the design team and have now included public lighting, sections of footpath, pedestrian crossing and improved safety at the Piltown Road junction as part of the overall project.

“I will continue to advocate for a footpath linking this busy area to Sevitt along the Narroways and I hope that the NTA see sense and provide funding for that section too.”

This Part 8 Scheme is now on public display and open to submissions.
