Jarlath Brennan looks at his options as Bective take on St Colmcille's.

Bective carve out victory on their excellent home surface

Bective hosted St Colmcille's in this Premiership Div 5 first round match on a lovely Tuesday evening with the home ground in excellent condition.

The home side used the prestine surface to chalk a deserved victory, 3 – 9 to St Colmcille's 1 – 9.

St. Colmcille's, playing towards the roadside goals, started well and pointed on five minutes.

They quickly followed up with a goal on eight minutes after a goalmouth scramble. They pointed again on 13 minutes to go five points ahead and looked the stronger team with many fine footballers and strong running.

However, as per their usual resolve, Bective came back into the game with clever positioning and a strong carry from Sean Crinion who gave the goalie no chance with a shot to the corner of the net on 14 minutes.

Both sides defended well with Bective’s Gary Brennan, Jarlath Brennan, Simon Heneghan, Ben Malone, Eanna O,Reilly and Ciaran Casey working very hard until Paul Mc Cabe landed a point from long range on 20 minutes. Michael Lyness came into the midfield area.

McCabe pointed from a free kick on 25 minutes to bring the sides level. St Colmcilles went two points ahead before a penetrating carry from Malone found Ben Sherlock , who showed plenty of skill and pointed from play. Sherlock pointed again from a free kick to conclude the half’s scoring. Bective 1-4, St Colmcille's 1 – 4.

Bective started the second half with intense pressure on the St Colmcille's goal capitalised by Pat O‘Sullivan who conducted a cute Kerry man rob of the St Colmcille's goalie’s toe tap and hoofed the ball into the back of the net. Bective now turned on the style with strong carries through the middle resulting in three points from Sherlock. (1 from a free kick).

St Colmcille's were still working hard and they hauled themselves back into the match with unanswered points in the 11th, 15th, 16th, 18th and 23rd minutes and leave just one point between the teams. Alex Connick came into the backline. Barry McEntee came into the forward line and had a fine shot saved by the St Colmcille’s keeper.

Bective were working hard to minimise scoring chances with Sean Crinion, Ciaran Collins, Pat O’Sullivan and McCabe supporting their backline. The momentum was with the “Cilles” but Casey, with a lung busting run down the dugout side, delivered a long-range effort that clipped the bar for a very welcome point on 25 minutes.

McCabe pointed a free kick from a very tight angle on 29 minutes. Sherlock fielded superbly behind his defender and blasted to the net on 32 minutes to seal this fine win for Bective.
