Ireland and the Birth of Europe Exhibition

The Columbans, Association of Friends of St Columbanus and Meath County Council, in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs, are delighted to welcome Ireland and the birth of Europe exhibition to County Meath. Ireland joined the European Economic Community, the forerunner of the European Union, in 1973, but Irish participation in the development of European identities dates back more than a thousand years. After the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West, Europeans built on its foundations to develop their own culture and identity. The Irish played an important role in this great enterprise. This richly illustrated exhibition tells the story of the part played by Irish scholars and missionaries in the early history of the European idea. St Columbanus was the first of the Irish missionaries and scholars to make a home on the Continent and in around the year 600, became the first to write ‘of all of Europe’ (totius Europae). He and his followers contributed to the shaping of a European heritage that endures today. Researched, written and curated by Dr Damian Bracken, University College Cork, and Dr Angela Byrne for the Department of Foreign Affairs. Graphic design by Studio Suss.

Bread Baking Experience at Martry Mill

Visit Irelands oldest working watermill and learn all about the history of mills, flour and Martry Mill itself. Martry Mill is a fully functional watermill on the River Blackwater, with the earliest records dating back to 1641. In 1859, the Tallon family took over the mill and have been running it ever since. The current owner, James, is the fourth generation of Tallon men to run the mill. Using local grain, Martry Mill grinds stoneground wholemeal flour for delivery to local supermarkets and bakeries, which has many health benefits over standard flour. Restoration work was recently carried out to restore the millwheel and internal machinery to their original state; this included the iconic waterwheel. Since the completion of the restoration work, Martry Mill has been open for tours and talks. Martry Mill is rich in history, as it has survived through famines, wars and recessions. James has worked in Martry Mill his entire life and is an expert in mill history and flour production. He loves any opportunity to talk about the mill's history, anecdotes from growing up there and how Martry Mill is part of the local community.

'Fourknocks: archaeology, astronomy and mythology'

Ardcath Clonalvy Heritage Society host this event about Fourknocks, a small passage-tomb complex situated close to Clonalvy, and less than 15km (10 miles) from the megalithic monuments of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. Excavated in 1950 by Patrick J Hartnett, and open to the public, Fourknocks is an extraordinary and beautiful monument. It likely dates to the time when Newgrange was built, just over 5,000 years ago. There is lots of megalithic art picked and incised onto the stones inside Fourknocks, some of it immaculately preserved.

Anthony Murphy of Mythical Ireland will speak in depth of his studies on this topic – 'Fourknocks: archaeology, astronomy and mythology'. Following the talk refreshments will be served and several books will be available to purchase including Ardcath Clonalvy Heritage Society publication by Frances Lee Gargan, The Parish of Ardcath Clonalvy: A History'.

Geological Heritage of County Meath Exhibition

The geology of Meath includes all its bedrock, subsoils and soils. Often summarised only as ‘the plains of Royal Meath’, it is in fact a landscape with an intricate and spectacular history, containing a multitude of geological features and sites that owe their origins to complex, dynamic and fascinating processes. This variation influences the county’s land-use patterns, farming tradition, habitats and biodiversity. We interact with our natural landscape on a daily basis and by understanding its formation we can learn more about our origins, our surrounding environment, and our sense of place. This exhibition has been complied by Dr. Robbie Meehan, geologist and author of the The Making of Meath: The County's Natural Landscape History.

Shedding Light on Swifts - Meath Swift Survey 2024

In 2024, Meath County Council with the support of the National Parks and Wildlife Service through the Local Biodiversity Action Fund commissioned Birdwatch Ireland to re-survey the county's Common Swift (Apus apus) population. This follows Meath's first survey of Swifts in 2019 which observed over 260 active nests in 12 towns and villages across County Meath. Five years on, it is time to investigate whether the County Meath Swift population has diminished, remained steady or grown between 2019 and 2024. Come along to this evening presentation from Birdwatch Ireland to learn about this iconic and intriguing migratory bird species, why it has suffered drastic population declines in Ireland and what is being done at a local level to halt the loss of this endangered species.

Connecting with Martry Mill

Martry Mill is one of the few working watermills in Ireland. The mill is a family-run watermill along the banks of the River Blackwater, halfway between Navan and Kells in Co. Meath. The mill has a rich history dating back to its oldest record from a land survey referencing “a tumbledown old mill” in 1323. It has survived famines, wars, floods and pandemics, and The Tallon family have been producing stoneground wholemeal flour in the mill since 1859. Martry Mill supplies bakeries, supermarkets and shops around Meath and surrounding counties with their wholemeal flour and supply directly from the mill. Located just 1km upstream from where the ancient Tailtean Games were held, Martry Mill is brimming with history. The theme of National Heritage Week 2024 is Connections, Routes and Networks. The Centre of Food Culture, Boyne Valley are delighted to present the opportunity to connect with Martry Mill, Ireland's Oldest Working Watermill and producer of wholemeal flour, to learn about the milling process and taste a sample of the bread that can be made from flour produced at the mill. What to expect: This event will begin by meeting at 6:30pm with a tea, coffee, cordial and bread tasting on arrival. James Tallon, miller at Martry Mill will then give a talk on the history of the mill, a tour of the mill and carry out a milling demonstration, with plenty of opportunity for questions and answers throughout.

The Boyne in Threads - Display

The Threads of Lore Group was established in 2021. It is a multi skilled group with experienced embroiderers sharing their talents to those with little or no experience of this ancient art. We have been collaborating with professional artists to design a tapestry entitled 'The Boyne in Threads'. This tapestry will have 13 panels and will tell the story of the Boyne Valley from source to sea. We are proud to present a panel of this project during heritage week. This panel depicts the last journey of the Boyne River before it meets the sea with the tales and folkore associated with the region. Visitors will have an opportunity to view the first panel of this ambitious project during the normal opening hours of Dunshaughlin Library from 17th to 23rd August and can meet some of the embroiderers on Friday 23rd August from 10 am-1pm to see them at work and to discuss the project where they will answer any questions.

Meath Travellers Workshop, Traveller Living History Exhibition

23 August, 11am - 3:30pm

CYWS Hall

Fair Green, Navan C15D5DR

The Traveller Living History Exhibition will be set up with the Traditional Traveller Barrel top wagon, campfire scene, shelter tent, tinware display, bread tasting, flower making and storytelling. Visitors or passers by will be encouraged to sit down and listen to the storyteller, taste some bread, have some refreshments. To take a step back to a time where the majority of Travellers lived in camps on the side of the road. To have a fully interactive experience by sitting in the wagon, sitting at the camp fire learning about the rich culture and heritage associated with the traditional Irish Travellers.

Key parts of Traveller culture today are shared through storytelling with stories about the history and cultural understandings, shared use of language and strong values built around extended families. Stories have been passed from generation to generation and are part of a rich storytelling history in the Traveller community. Stories in the Travelling community are significant because they are a point of memory. But often people can forget their importance, and how much they mean to Travellers. The stories are told with their own particular rhythms and humour.

The well-known storyteller Nell Marie McDonagh and her daughter Laura McDonagh will entertain, impart knowledge and keep the audience captivated with her lived experience bringing to life her memories of living on the side of the road with her family.

Tom McDonnell / Martin Tormay. Traveller tin smithing is a skill mastered by Travellers in the making of utensils from tin.

The living history project has a variety of aspects. The visual impact is very important to help people envisage what it would have been like to live in a Traveller camp. The colour, enchanting and ornate decoration of particularly the Wagon will captivate people to take a closer look. The informal chat is a characteristic of how Travellers communicate and it brings you into an atmosphere of acceptance and belonging. Not in the way of feeling that you are a fellow Traveller, but in a sense of being invited to join in and not feeling that you are imposing.

Understanding of what life was like for Travellers many years ago

How you slept - no beds - How you washed - no bathroom -How you cooked and ate - no kitchen

How you stored things - no fridge - How you earned a living - no social welfare

Farming labour – Tin smithing - Horse dealing - Knife grinders

Entertainers - musician, singer, story teller and news carrier

Barter system - trading, but not with money

Bat Walk in Balrath Woods

24 August, 8pm - 10pm

Balrath Woods Car Park

Balrath, Burtonstown, Co. Meath

Co. Meath

Join Bat Conservation Ireland to celebrate National Heritage Week with Meath County Council at Balrath Woods for a batty evening stroll.

Meet us at car park in Balrath Woods for a bat chat followed by a moonlit walk through the woodland with bat detectors.

Irish bats are often associated with woodlands and can be found in wooded habitats throughout the year. Tree roosts can be used in summer for raising young, in autumn for mating and in winter for hibernating. At night bats may commute through woodlands on their way to foraging grounds or may use woodlands for foraging in. This makes woodland habitats like Balrath important ecological corridors for bats.

So come along to Balrath Woods to learn about and possibly see (and hear!) the bats of woodland habitats in Ireland.

This event is suitable for children aged 7+. All children must be supervised by parents/guardians at all times. The walk will take place on woodland tracks in low light levels. Wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear.
