Surprise celebration for Betty on her 90th Birthday

Great grandmother Betty Fleming received quite the shock after being surprised with a secret 90th birthday party at The Castle Arch Hotel in Trim on Friday night.

Her daughter Elanor O’Connor helped pull the wool over Betty's eyes by telling her mum she was bringing her out for a dinner to celebrate the milestone but Betty soon realised what was happening when she arrived to a crowd of family and friends singing Happy Birthday! “She got the shock of her life,” said Elanor.

“She was stunned but absolutely thrilled to see everyone there,” she added.

Originally from Dublin, Betty has been a resident in Trim for 25 years where she is an active member of the community as her doting daughter explains: "She has a great circle of friends is a member of many local clubs including the Active Retirement club.

“She is still going to Mass and she loves meeting her friends in the hotel for a cup of tea and a scone afterwards, I don’t know where she gets her energy from!

"I can’t keep up with her social life!”

The 90-year-old has a flair for fashion and carefully chooses her outfits for even the most mundane occasion according to Elanor who said:

"She loves her style and would never leave the house without her lipstick on!"

Elanor says family is the centre of Betty’s world and she cared for her husband Joe for ten years after he suffered a stoke before passing away in 2008.

Betty celebrated the night with her five children, 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren and enjoyed music from Matt Leavy who provided the soundtrack for the night.

“It’s a night we will never forget,” said Elanor.
