Water station for bottle refills at Trim agri-show

The Royal Meath Show in Trim, one of the biggest events for the farming community, is trying to keep the show site free of bottle litter this year.

Francis Cotter, chairperson of the Royal Meath Show, explains: "Every year there is a lot of plastic and rubbish scattered around the field after the show. The bins can’t cope. Our team, along with the Trim Tidy Towns volunteers, work hard to leave it spick and span. It makes more sense if less rubbish is created. We have decided to partner with BRITA and Bluestone Sales and Distribution Ltd to provide a water station at the show this year where people can refill their water bottles for free. We would encourage visitors to the show to bring their water bottles along, or get one at the show, so as not to create unnecessary litter. BRITA have a bottle with a built-in filter, which I think is a great idea. I use a refillable bottle myself every day and it is a lifesaver. I would encourage all our participants and visitors at this year’s show to try and reduce litter to make our lives a bit easier afterwards and respect the environment’.

Brian Heffernan, chairperson of Trim Tidy Towns, welcomed the initiative saying: "This is a fantastic idea from the Royal Meath Show to encourage people to use their own re-fillable water bottles. Every year we find plastic bottles thrown in hedgerows, around the field and on the road. It affects our biodiversity and spoils a great amenity. Hopefully this initiative will encourage people to choose to reuse, whenever possible."

Young Hereford bull Portnabob Limbo, skilfully handled by young farmer Jack Canty, is getting ready for the show so made no comment!

This year’s show takes place on Sunday 1st September in the Porchefields in Trim. See www.royalmeathshow.com for more details.
