Work commences on new Lidl store in Enfield

Lidl has started construction work on its new modern ‘concept’ supermarket in Enfield, which is due to open early next year.

Planning permission for the new store was approved in March 2024 and will see the retailer expand its Meath store network to seven when it opens in early 2025.

Located at Dublin Road in Enfield, Lidl’s newest state-of-the-art store will see a significant investment into the local area, creating up to 30 new jobs with the retailer adding to its 6,000 strong workforce throughout Ireland.

Up to 80 construction jobs will also be supported during the development phase which got underway this week with contractors Glebe Builders breaking ground to develop the 1,400 sqm sales floor area retail unit.

Having first opened in the county in 2004 in Trim, Lidl Ireland currently employs more than 140 people in the county across its stores in Ashbourne, Bettystown, Clonee, Trim, Dunshaughlin and Navan.

Sustainability is at the fore of the Enfield store, with the retailer’s pioneering ‘concept’ design incorporating an ISO 50001-certified energy management system, high performing energy efficient technologies and the installation of solar panels and electric vehicle (EV) charging points.

Turning the sod at Lidl’s new site in Enfield, Brian Smyth, Regional Property Director for Lidl Ireland said: “We have had an ambition to bring market leading value to Enfield for a long time. Meath is hugely important to Lidl, as we have traded proudly here since 2004 with the opening of our Trim store.

"The development of our new store in Enfield represents a major investment for Lidl, contributing significantly to the local economy and providing long term employment for the area as we expand our store network in Meath to seven stores.

"With construction now underway with our construction partners Glebe Builders, the local community can look forward to an unrivalled retail experience, shopping high quality products with Ireland’s best value retailer when we open our doors in early 2025.”

Earlier this year, Lidl Ireland announced a total of €91 million worth of goods and services was procured from Meath suppliers and business partners by the retailer in 2023.

Lidl’s key Meath suppliers include a longstanding and fruitful partnership with Meade Farm whom the retailer has also partnered with to develop the ‘Lidl Farm’. Together with Meade, Lidl has turned 8.5 acres of land into a free educational resource for schoolchildren at its Newbridge Distribution Centre demonstrating how the retailer’s relationship has developed significantly over the years from a supplying produce to a full-fledge partnership.

Lidl Ireland currently employs more than 6,000 employees in its 179 stores, Head Office in Tallaght and three distribution centres and regional offices based in Charleville, Newbridge and Mullingar in County Westmeath which will service the planned new Enfield store.
