First September Sunday means it's Royal Meath Show time in Trim

It’s back to school time which means its time for the Royal Meath Show to come to town. Sunday 1st September will see lots of action in the Porch Fields. From Wednesday, the landscape of the field will change with the arrival of marquees, gates, and colours. The Child of Prague statue is out and fingers are crossed that the weather will be favourable.

From early Sunday morning all roads with be a buzz of activity with everyone going the one direction. The cattle will be over to the side of the field getting washed and blow dried to have them looking their finest for the walk around the ring. There will be a large display of sheep here as well, with the best of the local flocks coming out for the day. The competitions in both of these sections start from 11am and will show the best of junior handlers up to the more experienced, and is great to watch the control these people have over even the biggest animals.

The horse section is a very busy area all day, with classes for the youngest riders up to the ladies in the side saddle riding classes. With some big competitions here for hidden hunters and ex racing horses, if you are any way interested in equines, there is plenty here to pass an hour or two.

The middle of the field will be dedicated to all types of trade stands, from the choice of buying a new tractor to a bit of lego, all options will be well covered here. There is always a large display of goats at the show and this year promises to be as good as ever, From the smallest pygmy goats to a big buck goat all will be present and correct.

Also in this part of the field there will be a range of Highland Cattle . The Scottish breed is becoming more popular all the time and some local owners are more than happy to discuss the breeds if you have any questions.

The Artisan food and craft tents are always a very popular area, with a range of local crafters taking part, you will never know what little treasure you might pick up here. During the day there will be demonstrations taking place with Lorraine from Daisy Cottage and Morans Jams showing how its done. Beside this area is the Home Industries area, the large marquee is always jam packed with fine examples of knitting, flowers, cookery and art. The Children's classes are a great display of the imagination of our young people, with wooden spoons turned into a doll or a stone turned into a clock.

The dog show will take place at 1pm and entries are being taken on the day from 11am

Music is always very important on the day and this year is no different. Entertainment starts at 11am with local lass Eimear Furlong taking to the stage, Declan Aungier will take over at 1pm, leading up to the headline of the talented Johnny Brady. Johnny will be on stage from 3pm to 5pm, with the stage rocking all the time.
