120 free parking spaces open at Navan's Pairc Tailteann

Meath Co Council has opened 120 free parking spaces at Pairc Tailteann on the Commons Road while upgrade works at the Fairgreen rule dozens of spaces out of use.

The Páirc Tailteann car park in Navan will open for free from today, Monday 7th October.

Construction work commenced in Fairgreen in September 2024 and it is expected to last for approximately 12 months. This will result in a temporary reduction in parking spaces in Fairgreen and Bedford Place car parks.

"To minimise disruption for retail, services, and businesses in Navan Town Centre, Meath County Council has taken proactive measures by offering free alternative parking for customers," a council spokesperson said.

"These parking spaces opened this morning (7th October) and are available from Monday to Friday. This arrangement aims to ensure that customers still have convenient access to parking while the construction work is ongoing."

Works are currently underway in Old Cornmarket and the Fairgreen as the next phase of the Navan 2030 scheme is rolled out.

With work on the cycle scheme on Railway Street and the Trim Road complete, attention has shifted to Old Cornmarket with Church Hill and Fairgreen, Bakery Lane and Preston Place bundled with the project that's expected to take 18 months to complete.

At July's Navan Municipal District meeting, Fine Gael Cllr Linda Murray said she was concerned at the loss of parking spaces in the town as a result of improvement works.

"We are seeing beautiful landscaping being carried out cycle lanes and an enhancement of the town but we are going to have less parking spots," said Cllr Murray.

"There are several spaces going to be removed to widen the footpaths, there will be four new disabled spaces and in addition there are two age friendly spaces but there are currently no plans to increase the number of car parking spaces in the town centre.

"It is sometimes impossible to get parking in the town particularly on a Friday. We are going through a tough time traffic wise as a result of the amazing upgrades we are getting, the town is looking beautiful but people are getting very frustrated and I think we need to think carefully about reducing the car parking spaces.

"We are only talking about 12 spaces but these spaces are going to be vital to businesses."
