Farewell to a ‘gentleman’ Nobber man killed in road collision laid to rest

Tributes were paid to a much-loved 81-year-old Nobber man killed in a two-vehicle collision on the Nobber to Kingscourt road last week.

Brendan Brennan of Spiddal, Nobber, was a hugely popular character and news of his passing in last Tuesday evening's fatal collision was greeted with widespread shock and sadness in the north Meath village.

With his trademark cap on backwards and his dog by his side, he was a familiar face around the village and many commented that there was rarely a day you that you wouldn't see Brendan's red van parked on the street. He had time for everybody young and old and always had a kind word and a smile for everyone he met. He was also hugely knowledgeable particularly when it came to history.

His Funeral Mass took place in St John the Baptist Church, Nobber, on Sunday where he was remembered as a gentleman and someone who was always willing to lend a hand with whatever jobs needed to be done. He was laid to rest afterwards in the local cemetery.

Brendan was honorary president of Nobber Pride of Place and helped out with many projects around the village. Committee member and friend Kenneth Clarke said the community had been in total shock and was numbed by news of his passing.

“We always helped each other out. He was a great character. He had a great pair of hands and was a good all rounder. Anything he did, it was always done right. No job was too big or too small and nothing was ever a problem. He would never see you stuck.”

“He was always on the go. He only stopped digging graves about two years ago.”

Another person offering their condolences on RIP said: “An absolute gent and a very witty and knowledgeable character. Always had a kind word to say and a cheery hello. Always busy about the town. Nobber just won't be the same without him.”

Brendan is survived by his wife Bernie, daughter Kelly, son Kevin, grandchildren, relatives and a wide circle of neighbours and friends.
