Popular Cortown man's death in tragic accident shocks community

Sean Higgins was 'life and soul' of Hogans Farm & Turkey Store

There was great shock and sadness following the news of the death over the weekend of Sean Higgins, Athgaine, Cortown, Kells, following a freak accident while on a trip to the west of Ireland on Friday, when he is understood to have fallen down steps at guesthouse accommodation in Westport, Co Mayo.

Sean worked in Hogan's Turkey Farm, who in a tribute described him as a valued staff member and great friend, who had a heart of gold and was the life and soul of the party and of Hogans.

"For over 20 years, he was an integral part of our team here at Hogan's Turkeys. He was a beloved friend to everyone and was always willing to help. We are all truly devastated.”

Cllr Mike Bray also paid tribute to his “great friend”.

“A sorrow hangs over our local community in Cortown, Fordstown and further afield. Seanie was a friend to so many, a tremendous character, and he was one of the most obliging people you would ever meet,” he said.

Predeceased by his mother May, Sean is survived his father, John Joe, brother Frankie, partner Helen, sister-in-law Tina, extended family, neighbours and friends.

Reposing at his home until 9.30pm tonight, Sean's removal from his home is on Wednesday morning at 11.40am, arriving at Church of Christ the King, Cortown for Funeral Mass at 12 noon. Burial afterwards in Cortown Cemetery.
