The Allenstown “Craig” Waller Estate Map circa 1836.

St Ultan’s Historical Society map the past in Allenstown

St Ultan’s Historical Society will bring a two year project to a conclusion on Saturday next, when they officially release the enhanced old Allenstown “Craig” Waller Estate Map circa 1836.

The enhanced map of the old Allenstown estate will be available to buy on Saturday 9th November from 3-30pm to 5pm in Bohermeen community centre. The map has been reproduced after a huge amount of work has been done by ANU design on helping bring this project to fruition and there will be a limited number of maps available at €20 each or 3 for €50. They are reproduced at A2 size and are presented in a postal tube.

The map is quite a local historical document as most of the fields on the map have their old commonly used names written on them and with their local landscape changing somewhat since 1836, it connects the past and present using the “Field Names”. In times past almost every field in Ireland had its own distinct name and in the case of large estates the names were often used to direct workmen in the morning to their daily tasks for the day. In 2013 the Meath Field Names project published a book on the field names of Meath
