Kells author pens new book celebrating children's uniqueness

A Kells author says she was inspired to pen a book about adoption to encourage children to embrace their individuality.

Emilio the Emoo!, is heartwarming new children’s book by Founder & Emu Ink Publishing CEO, Emer Cleary that is a celebration of individuality, bravery and self-love.

The book follows the adventures of Emilio, a bright and colourful emu, raised by his adoptive parents, Mommy and Daddy Cow, on an Irish farm. Emilio faces challenges fitting in because of his unique looks and quirks – most notably, his inclination to "moo" like his parents.

The story takes an interesting turn when Emilio journeys to Australia to meet his biological family, teaching young readers about courage, acceptance, and the beauty of differences.

Written in a way that will resonate with all children – including those who may feel "different" because of how they think, speak, or act – Emilio the Emoo! is both an enjoyable read and a gentle reminder that being unique is something to celebrate.

Emer Cleary, author of Emilio the Emoo!, shared her excitement about the launch: “This story has been a labour of love. Emilio represents all children, those who feel different and those who are learning to embrace those differences. I hope the book sparks conversations about kindness, understanding, and celebrating what makes us unique.

”Adding to the spirit of giving this festive season, 10% of all sales from the event will be donated to Jigsaw, The National Centre for Youth Mental Health, supporting their vital work in empowering young people across Ireland.

Emer added, “Partnering with Jigsaw for this launch is especially meaningful, as Jigsaw’s work aligns beautifully with the book’s message of supporting young people.

“We are also hugely grateful to Starbucks Ireland, for supporting us through the hosting of the launch. Their passion for children’s wellbeing and inclusion has been evident to us for many years, through their unwavering support of our Schools’ Publishing Programme.”

Justin McDermott, Fundraising Manager at Jigsaw, commented: "Stories like Emilio the Emoo! are a wonderful way to introduce important values such as empathy, acceptance, and resilience to children. As a youth mental health charity, we are so genuinely delighted to be partnering with Emu Ink for this launch event, and we are so thankful for their support in making this most generous donation to support for our vital free therapy services for children and young people across Ireland”
