Murder investigation underway after discovery of woman's body at rural home

Gardaí have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of a woman's body at a rural residence in West Cavan last night.

One man has been arrested and he is currently being detained pursuant to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, at a Garda Station in the Cavan area.

The body of the woman (50's) was found after Gardaí were alerted to what is understood to have been an alleged stabbing incident at the domestic residence approximately 9.30pm.

She was pronounced deceased at the scene, which has since been preserved for technical examination by the Garda Technical Bureau, expected to take place later today (Sunday).

The county coroner has been informed and the woman’s body has now been conveyed to Cavan General Hospital for post-mortem examination.

An injured male (aged in his 60’s), was also discovered at the property. He was subsequently conveyed to Cavan General Hospital for treatment for serious injuries and reports are that he remains in a “serious but stable condition”.

The man in his 30's was arrested at a “separate location” say gardaí, who have set up an incident room to investigate the killing and house attack at Cavan Garda Station. A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) and Family Liaison Officer (FLO) will be appointed in due course.

Gardaí are not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter, but have at the same time launched a public appeal for information. They are especially interested in speaking to anyone who travelled in the area of Kilnavert of Ballyconnell last night, Saturday, January 11, between 8.30pm and 9.30pm

“Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and those with information to come forward,” said a statement issued this morning. “Anyone who travelled in the area of Kilnavert, Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan, last night, Saturday 11th January 2025, between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, is asked to provide Gardaí with any available camera footage, including dashcam recordings.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cavan Garda Station on (049) 436 8800, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
