Letter to the Editor: Stronger action needed to tackle domestic, sexual, gender-based violence
(Editor, Meath Chronicle)
Dear Sir - The Programme for Government announcement of measures to tackle domestic, sexual, and gender-based violence is a vital step forward but stronger action on funding is needed according to Meath Women’s Refuge and Support Services.
We welcome commitments to fully implement the Zero Tolerance strategy, further resource Cuan Agency, and deliver 280 refuge spaces by 2026.
Every day, women and children face the devastating consequences of violence
Last year, we accommodated 91 women and 99 in refuge and 530 received support in the community in Meath, yet many were turned away due to insufficient capacity.
State funding has been increased in recent years but remains inadequate, falling short of covering essential operational costs such building maintenance, counselling, and play therapy. Reliance on public donations is not sustainable for services that can save lives.
Since December five women have lost their lives as a result of violence therefore the urgent need to combat violence against women remains undeniable.
These commitments must be matched by decisive action and sustained investment. The establishment of Cuan, the dedicated agency for domestic, sexual, and gender-based violence, was a major milestone driven by the leadership of Justice Minister Helen McEntee.
Her unflinching support has been instrumental in driving development in Meath and across the country. We now call on the incoming Justice Minister to continue this legacy and prioritise delivering on these critical promises.
We also welcome proposals to enhance victim protection through stronger laws, specialised judges, and Garda training, but long-term prevention and capacity building at local level must be a core focus to break the cycle of violence. The new Government must prioritise increased, multi-year funding for front line service providers.”
Meath Women’s Refuge & Support Services urges the Government and the incoming Justice Minister to act swiftly and ensure that funding aligns with these commitments.
We remain committed to collaborate with Cuan and other partners to create a safer future for women and children across Ireland.
Yours
Meath Women's Refuge & Support Services
