Garda Band hit the right notes at Dunboyne NS as grandparents pay visit

Dunboyne Senior Primary School was delighted to invite the grandparents of its 3rd class children in for its first ever Tea and Tech event.

The school has been taking part in the Microsoft Dream Space Ambassadors programme this year and a group of 3rd and 5th class students have been taking part in monthly training sessions.

The Dream Space Ambassador Program is a Student Leadership and training program, supported by the Microsoft Dream Space Team in Dublin and Belfast. As part of this program, pupils take part in virtual training sessions to become Dream Space Ambassadors and then share what is learned by offering assistance to fellow students and the wider school community.

“Our ambassadors have worked with different classes throughout the school to share their knowledge of how to code a MicroBit,” explains teacher, Cliodhna Murphy.

“The MicroBit is a programmable device that allows students to get hands-on with coding and digital making. We have visited 3rd, 4th and 5th classes and supported students as they have learned to code the MicroBit.

“The latest training sessions was called ‘Older Wiser Learners (OWL)’. Today we live in a world dominated by rapid advances in technology. Our goal is to make sure that our older, wiser learners are not left behind in this digital world. That is why we invited grandparents in to celebrate Grandparents Day and raise awareness about cyber security.”

Topics included the importance of strong passwords, tips on how to spot a scam and how to spot a deep fake. After the presentation 3rd class students sang ‘You’ve got a Friend in Me’ and the school choir sang ‘Count on Me’ by Bruno Mars. A group of Irish dancers also performed a variety or reels and jigs.

“This very special occasion concluded with some tea and biscuits and time for the children to chat with their Grandparents and show them around the school. It was a wonderful event to celebrate our Grandparents who play such an important role in the lives of their Grandchildren.”

The Dunboyne Senior Primary School community was also delighted to welcome members of the Garda Band to the school on Friday the 31st of January in what was a thoroughly enjoyable event for the children. The Garda Band played a medley of uplifting and lively tunes including Ghostbusters, SpongeBob Squarepants, Taylor Swift, Baby Shark and many more. The children also had the opportunity to learn about the wide variety of instruments that the members of the Garda Band play.
