Father of boy stabbed in school felt he was 'saying goodbye' to his son when he got to the hospital
The father of an 11-year-old boy injured in a stabbing at his school this week has revealed that he felt he was saying goodbye to his son when he got to the hospital because he thought it was only "50/50" whether the young boy would pull through.
Stephen Geraghty has been speaking exclusively to Virgin Media News about the family's ordeal since Mason was seriously hurt at his school in Dublin and how they have been at the young boy's bedside in hospital since.
When Gardaí confirmed the incident on Tuesday morning, they said the children involved were students at the school, but this is not a criminal investigation because the pupils involved are below the age of criminal responsibility.
“About an hour after he arrived at hospital, there was a stage where he was critical. It was 50-50. I was asked to go in and comfort him. It’s very hard when you’re surrounded by 20-odd nurses and doctors and stuff like that. I thought I was saying goodbye to him.
“A stab-wound to the middle of his back, a couple of centimetres away from a main artery. It could have been a lot worse. He’s doing really well. He’s a little fighter. I don’t know where he gets the strength from, the energy. He’s a real tiny little thing. But he’s doing really well. The nurses and surgeons are all very pleased with him.
“His younger brother, he was in the yard at the time, and he’d just seen Mason and his teacher, and blood pouring from his back. So he’s going to need help as well.
“My boy has been hard done by here. First of all that he’s in ICU at the minute, but then second of all, this ruling that nothing can be done and we just have to get on with our lives. It just makes no sense at all.
“I just want to say, what’s going to be done about this? Where is Mason’s help here? An 11-year-old has been stabbed in school. I haven’t heard a thing from anybody, a minister of state or minister for education, I don’t know.”
