Letters to the Editor: Stop prioritising cars
(Editor, Meath Chronicle)
Dear sir - Lots of people commute into Navan on a daily basis, but we sometimes seem to forget that not all people do it by car. Lots use public transport and the ever-improving bus system. Lots walk and cycle, and more will do so if it is made safer.
People like to complain that there is too much traffic. The reason that there is too much traffic is that there are too many cars, and the only proven way to reduce the number of cars is to provide realistic alternatives. Many want or need to drive, there is no denying or changing that, but many people also want to use active travel but at present cannot.
There are countless examples of how building more roads will only encourage more people to drive, which only adds more cars to our roads, and on and on it goes. Navan is a small, market town and there is limited space to work with, and if we are being realistic about solving congestion in Navan then we stop prioritising cars and get serious about active travel and public transport.
Yours,
Ed Moynihan,
Chairperson,
Navan Cycling Initiative.
