Delia’s crosses raise €7,600 for Meath Women's Refuge

A MULHUSSEY woman made 2,600 St Brigid's crosses this year raising €7,600 for Women's Aid.

Delia Heneghan made the iconic crosses at the home she shares with her brother Pat in from rushes that grow on their farmland.

She recently presented a cheque for the funds to Meath Women's Refuge and thanked all those who had contributed to her fundraising efforts.

"I couldn't believe how much money came in," she said. "People came from Navan and Athboy to get one of the crosses".

Delia made the crosses in time for St Brigid's Day and they were available in the three churches in Kilcloon Parish and in local businesses. People were asked to make a donation when taking one.

"I want to thank everyone who contributed and Fr Kelly for allowing me leave them in Kilcloon, Batterstown and Little Chapel churches. I'd also like to thank the local businesses who helped, Michael Walsh Butchers, Dee's Hairdressers, Kevin Taggert, Kilcock, Doonan's Butchers, Bill Clarke, Kilcloon and Ashling Kelleher, Maynooth.

Meath Women's Refuge is planning a new 12-unit refuge facility in Navan, set to open in 2027. The organisation provided emergency refuge accommodation to 196 women and children in 2024.

In addition to providing refuge accommodation, Meath Women’s Refuge and Support Services supports hundreds of women each year through court accompaniment, helpline support, counselling, and outreach services.
