‘Stop the sale’ of Bord na Mona Recycling
Kells man Seamus McDonagh has launched a new community campaign against the privatisation of Bord na Móna Recycling called ‘Stop the Sale’.
The campaign has produced stickers which customers can put on their bins to show their opposition to the sale of the last publicly owned domestic waste collection service in the country.
His campaign came as Bord na Mona workers served strike action on the company.
McDonagh (right) said: “I was shocked to hear the Government is considering selling Bord na Móna Recycling to a private company. As a customer of Bord na Móna Recycling and a firm believer in services being run for the public good rather than profit, I felt that something should be done to show our support for the semi-state company.
“I have also talked to several Bord na Móna Recycling workers who all strongly oppose the sale of the company.
“Bord na Móna Recycling also has one of the best environmental records of any domestic waste collection service."
He warned customers could be assured that when the private operators take over they will eventually be paying more for a lesser service.
“I believe the campaign is best summed up by its slogan ‘Stop the Sale: Keep BNM Recycling Public: Better for Customers, Workers and the Environment’. If people are interested in getting any stickers or helping in any way they can contact the campaign through our Facebook page ‘BNM Bins Stop the Sale’.”
