Navan town bus service now delivering 415,000 trips a year as new bus and drivers added to the schedule
Recent changes to the Navan Town Bus Service has seen a great improvement in punctuality in the service which delivers 415,000 trips a year around the town.
Among the recent changes include the redirecting of buses away from Brews Hill to Boreen Kells.
An extra bus has been allocated to the service along with six additional drivers and Meath County Council has proposals to provide ten new bus stops this year.
The Mayor of Navan, Cllr Eddie Fennessy said the local town bus service had been under huge pressure to keep time on both of its routes.
"Peak time congestion was a major factor in that and I've lobbied for a route change for over a year. On the old route, buses leaving the Paddy O'Brien Street stop, had to pass through seven sets of town centre traffic lights before it reached Brews Hill.
"Redirecting buses up the Boreen Keel was the only logical solution. Buses now operate on time, and as per the schedule, which is great news for passengers."
He pointed out that a bus stop at the old Foresters Hall site on Brews Hill was removed to accommodate the new bus route. "It was a busy stop. However, a new bus stop will be installed near the Páirc Tailteann junction with the Boreen Keel.
"An extra bus has been added to the fleet and six extra drivers too. They are positive changes and I thank the NTA and Bus Éireann for making those improvements to the service.
"415,000 trips per year are made on the buses connecting communities across Navan like never before. The service has become a vital piece of community infrastructure in our town.
"I see children, pensioners and everyone in between every day on the buses. I am a frequent user myself and I'm sure I speak for the entire community when I say we would be lost without the service.
"Some families with school children have been adversely affected by changes made to the Gainstown terminus. I ask the NTA & Bus Éireann to engage with those families to try and resolve the situation as quickly as possible."
Meath County Council has plans for two new bus stops, one in either direction, at Blackcaste Demesne on the Slane Road, Blackcastle Estate, Johnstown Village and Cois Glaisin. A new stop will also be provided at Academy Street and a bus shelter will be provided at the existing stop near the fire station.
There are also plans for two new bus stops at Robinstowsn beyond 2025.
