Navan Clean Coasts roadshow event highlights power of coastal photography
An Taisce’s Clean Coasts Programme recently co-hosted the Clean Coasts Roadshow in Navan on April 10th at Navan Library, with a special focus on the annual ‘Love Your Coast’ photography competition.
The event, held in partnership with Navan Camera Club, celebrated the powerful role photography holds in environmental storytelling.
Navan Camera Club Chairman Dave Dyar presented a stunning collection of 26 member-submitted images taken by the club, while Seán Berry a 2024 ‘Love Your Coast’ finalist showcased his photography portfolio, including in 2024 entry. Both photographers shared stories and insights, both emotional and technical, behind the photos they shared.
Dave said “Since I took up photography as a hobby, I have found what I see and how the camera interprets my vision can be quite different. But it has also subtly taught me to observe my surroundings in a new light and appreciate the diversity of nature.”
During his presentation Seán’s shared the interesting story behind his incredible photo capturing rare bioluminescence at Port beach, in Co. Louth, which made it to the finals of ‘Love Your Coast’ in 2024.
While out to capture some sky photos, he was packing up to drive home, when he caught sight of a strange blue glow in the corner of his eye. An extremely rare sight for this beach with only whispers of historic sightings, it was an incredible capture of photography. An extraordinary moment that he managed to preserve through his lens.
This is the third year that Clean Coasts has teamed up with Navan Library and Navan Camera Club, and included contributors to the Clean Coasts ‘Love Your Coast’ competition. The event continues to inspire and engage local communities, while shining a light on the beauty and importance of protecting Ireland’s coastline, through the medium of photography.
The Clean Coasts Roadshow is a series of informative talks and workshops tailored for coastal communities across Ireland, taking place between January and May each year. This initiative brings together individuals interested in protecting their local beaches, seas, and marine environments.
The Roadshow events cover a range of topics, including biodiversity, dune systems, marine litter, wildlife, sustainable developments, and the work of local groups and organizations. These events also serve as a platform for community groups to discuss practical matters, such as building volunteer capacity, attracting new members, and sharing responsibilities.
