Meath motorist hit speed of 139km/h in 80km/h zone
A motorist caught speeding at 139km/h in a 80km/h zone in Dunboyne was one of 2,800 drivers being detected for motoring offences in Ireland over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.
A Garda Roads Policing Operation was in place throughout the weekend between 7am Thursday 17th April until 7am on Tuesday, 22nd April 2025.
There were three road deaths during the same period with 11 serious collisions which led to 12 people receiving serious and life-threatening injuries.
Among the fatalities was a young boy killed after being struck by a car in a Mullingar housing estate last Monday. He was treated at the scene before being taken by ambulance to Mullingar Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The four-year old has since been named locally as Abdur Rehman who had just celebrated his birthday on Saturday.
Another fatal accident occurred on Monday in Ardagh, Co Limerick, leading to the death of a male in his 20s. Gardaí and emergency services responded to a collision involving a car and a motorcycle at the intersection of R521 and R523 in Ardagh village. The motorcyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Lastly, a teenage adult died following a collision on Sunday between a scrambler and a car in Dublin last Sunday. The driver of the scrambler, named as Jason Monks, was taken to Tallaght Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Another two-car collision on Monday in Ballysadare, Sligo, saw four people seriously injured. Gardaí and emergency services responded to a collision on the N59 at Ballysadare. The occupants of one vehicle, two adult females, aged in their 40s and 20s, along with a nine-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl, were transported by ambulance to Sligo University Hospital with serious injuries. The sole occupant of the second vehicle, a woman in her 50s, was taken to the hospital for assessment.
Fixed charge offences were also recorded over the bank holiday weekend period with 225 given for using mobile phones while driving, over 160 for unaccompanied learner drivers, and 73 for having no seatbelt on. 109 vehicles were seized from unaccompanied learner permit holders and another 438 were seized for having no tax or insurance.
