Heeney signs new deal with United

Bellewstown man Luke Heeney has signed a new deal with Drogheda United.

Heeney is now heading into his sixth straight season in claret and blue, having joined his local club in 2019 from St Patrick’s Athletic.

The versatile 24-year-old, who has played both in midfield and at right-back made 32 appearances for the club in all competitions last season.

The Meath man has now made 119 appearances across his five year spell with the club to date.

"I’m absolutely delighted to be back for another year. There is a great buzz around the club and the town at the moment and I’m just really looking forward to hopefully another successful year and improving on last year.

“Going into my sixth year is a bit mad. It’s just gone by so quickly but I have really loved every minute of it.

“It means everything to me. I love playing for this club. It’s given me so many great nights and memories down through the years and hopefully there are many more to come over the next year,” Heeney expressed.

Manager Kevin Doherty also expressed his delight at the re-signing of Heeney, who is one of four players of the current squad with over 100 appearances in claret and blue.

“You can’t underestimate what it means for local players to be playing for Drogheda. It’s going to be Luke’s sixth straight season at the club.

“He’s very versatile. Elicha (Ahui) was brilliant in the first half of the season for us but when Luke stepped in during the second half of the season his performances were excellent.

“Luke is traditionally a midfielder for us and his performances in the middle during the season were brilliant too.

“He’s very good technically, and sometimes doesn’t get the credit he deserves for that. He’s got better each season over the last five years he’s been with the club,” manager Kevin Doherty explained.
