Trim students’ ‘Martine Mourning’ costume for the Junk Kouture final.

Good mourning from Trim... Scoil Mhuire students into Junk Kouture final

Trim students Sara Staraityte and Isabelle Kelly will represent Scoil Mhuire at the Junk Kouture final with their costume Martine Mourning. Marine Mourning is heavily inspired by the 18th century mourning dress.

The student designers feel that the world should be in "mourning" as an estimated 100 million marine animals die each year from plastic waste alone, the materials were inspired by common ocean pollution.

The colour palette for the design was inspired by oil spills as the designers were captivated by the shimmering greens and purples yet terrified by the horrific consequences.

They also included small marine themed accents for example the empty contact lenses cases designed to look like fisheyes, or the wire fish fixed to the hat.

The Junk Kouture final takes place in The Helix in May.
