Close but no cigar for Elliott at Grand National

Second and fourth for Summerhill trainer as Mullins lands the big one

Despite saddling 10 of the 32 runners in Saturday's Grand National there was no joy for local connections as Gordon Elliott had to settle for second place with Delta Work seven and a half lengths behind the Willie Mullins trained I Am Maximus.

Elliott also had the fourth placed finisher as Sam Ewing guided Galvin to a fine finish a further length back, but there was disappointment for two of the leading Meath-trained horses in the field Mahler Mission and Vanillier.

The John McConnell trained Mahler Mission was sent off at 18/1, but unseated jockey Ben Harvey at the 15th, while Gavin Cromwell's Vanillier struggled to get into the race and had to settle for 14th at odds of 14/1.

Cromwell's other horse in the race Limerick Lace failed to jusify joint-favouritism of 7/1 and never really travelled well after making a mistake early in the race and had to settle for seventh.

Dunshaughlin jockey Keith Donoghue got around the four mile course and negotiated the 30 fences safely and finished 16th on board Capodanno for Mullins and JP McManus.

Three of Elliott's other five runners in the race failed to finish.

Run Wild Fred was a non-runner, while Coko Beach was 11th and The Goffer was 13th.

Farouk D'alene ran a decent race at 100/1 before being pulled up at the 26th fence. Minella Crooner also pulled up at the second last at odds of 125/1 as did Bective Stud's Chemical Energy (50/1).
