Sherlock TV series filming in Dunsany

Mystery television series ‘Sherlock and Daughter' is filming on location at Dunsany Castle this week.

Warner Bros Discovery commissioned the original crime thriller series created, written, and executive produced by Northern Ireland’s Brendan Foley (Cold Courage, The Man Who Died). It stars David Thewlis (Fargo, Landscapers, The Artful Dodger) as the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, and Blu Hunt (The Originals, The Mutants).

The eight-part series features an older Holmes, less confident and out of his comfort zone, mysteriously unable to investigate a sinister case without risking the lives of his closest friends. He then meets Amelia (Hunt), an American who, after her mother’s mysterious murder, learns that Sherlock may be her missing father.

Despite wildly different backgrounds and attitudes, the pair must work together to solve a global conspiracy, crack her mother’s murder and find out for sure if she really is Sherlock’s daughter. The cast also includes Dougray Scott as Holmes’ nemesis, Moriarty.

The series, co-produced in the UK by Starlings Distribution’s affiliate Albion Television with co-production partner StoryFirst, is shooting in several locations in Ireland, including Dunsany, and will air on streaming service Discovery+ later this year.

Meanwhile, actress Barbara Rush, who starred opposite Rock Hudson in ‘Captain Lightfoot’, filmed in Meath in the 1950s, died recently in California, USA, aged 97.

Hudson starred as Michael Martin, Captain Lightfoot, in the film made in 1954. Michael Martin is a headstrong young patriot who has turned to highway robbery to support his country’s cause against England in 1815.

Popular culture depicts highwaymen as folk heroes. In one case, Martin gifted a large sum of money to a starving family facing eviction from their home. He then lurked in the vicinity, waited for the landlord’s agent to collect his rent, and relieved him of it as he left. Rush played Lightfoot’s love interest, Aga Doherty.

Bective Abbey and Slane Castle were two of the locations used in Meath. Hilton Edwards had a part as did Charles Fitzsimons from Kells, brother of Maureen O’Hara. Filmed almost entirely on location in Ireland, this was one of the first Universal pictures to be filmed away from Hollywood.
