Cavan Sci Fi film fanatic to host first ever Drogheda Comic Con this weekend!

A CAVAN Sci Fi film fanatic is bringing the first Drogheda Comic Con to the town this weekend.

Hot on the heels of bringing a similar event to Kells last month, Dave Gernon's Mini-Con convention is making its way to The Barbican Theatre On 19th May at 1pm.

The Comic Con movement has exploded in recent years with these events bringing with them an amazing array of cosplayers from all fandoms and franchises including Star Wars, Marveland Anime favourites coming together to celebrate their passion for all things weird and wonderful.

Expect to see Stormtroopers, Marvel Heroes, Anime characters and lots of other fandoms descending on Drogheda for this very exciting event.

Dozens of traders will be present selling all the usual convention essentials including comics, Pokémon cards, Lego, collectibles, retro toys, unique art, gifts and loads more.

Special guest talks will include Femi Taylor, who will discuss her iconic role as Oola in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Neil Ellis, prop and concept model maker whose repertoire includes work on Harry Potter, Captain America, Pirates of the Caribbean, Red Dwarf and dozens of other huge productions, including all the Disney Era Star Wars Movies and the upcoming Acolyte series.

Neil will be joined on stage by Stephanie Silva, who wore his creations on-screen in the Star Wars movies. They will discuss the relationship between the creation of droid costumes and the performance behind the onscreen movement of the character, and how each others’ roles affected one another.

Guests will be signing items including their own range of photos from the movies and will be available for meet and greet throughout the day.

There will also be a live chat with the Bounty Bros, creators of breathtakingly accurate costumes and masks used by cosplayers across the globe. Chris and Darren will be seeking volunteers to transform live on stage.

Cosplayers will provide an amazing spectacle as the entourage patrols The Barbican providing unbelievable photo opportunities courtesy of Karen from All Sorts of Photography, who will have backdrops set up for pro cosplay shots and family photos.

Life-size droids will roam the corridors of The Barbican, transporting spectators into a galaxy far far away.

Artists and Illustrators will also be on-hand for live sketching, chats about their work and advice for budding artists.

Dave who is living in Bailieborough previously spoke of how one movie he saw as a youngster spurred on this love for the Sci-Fi scene.

"I was five or six when I saw the movie Dark Crystal and whole world of the Dark Crystal was created from scratch, it was all sets and puppetry and practical effects and it blew my mind. It is a form of escapism I suppose. "

He says the family friendly event attracts a wide variety of people interested in film.

"You have kids turning up reusing their Halloween costumes to people who have spent thousands on a costume," he said.

"We have seen a community grow over the last year with all of the events. We have a lot of neurodivergent adults and children coming along so we are very open and inclusive. It is truly a family event, there is something for everyone. Everyone comes smiling and everybody leaves smiling."

This is an all-inclusive unmissable event with something for people of all ages and backgrounds.
