Navan rental bike scheme set to be extended

The Tier Nextbike Rental Bikes scheme in Navan is likely to be extended by Meath Co Council because of its success, a meeting of Navan Municipal Council heard last week.

Cllr Yemi Adenuga had called on the council to address the arbitrary parking and abandonment of the bikes on footpaths and random places around Navan to avoid accidents and prevent vandalism.

She was glad to see the council had approached Tier Bikes about the issue and she too had raised it with them herself, although she still sees them parked inappropriately.

Cllr Alan Lawes suggested that they could offer a discount to park properly as an incentive.

Councillors were told that as part of the trial scheme, Tier had established a flexi-zone system, where parking outside of the zone incurs penalties for bike users. The bike hire ‘terms of use’ also prohibits certain parking behaviours, such as blocking footpaths or obstructing entrances. The Council has brought the matters to the attention of Tier, and they have committed to providing further attention to the parking of Tier rental bikes in Navan.

Director of Services, Martin Murray said it is a highly successful scheme with very high usage and the council intended extending it.

“There may be a few incidents of poor parking, but 95 per cent are parking properly.”

He said Cllr Lawes' suggestion could be raised with the company.

Any complaints or issues relating to the parking or use of Tier bikes can be reported directly to Tier by post to Tier Mobility Ireland Limited, Riverside Two, Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, Dublin 2, D02KV60 or by phone to Tier on +353 61 540 019 or by email to info@nextbike.ie.
