'Tales from an Irish Thatch'... Cottage stories to fund thatched roof
'Tales from an Irish Thatch' by Aine McGarry is a captivating collection of stories that explore the past and present life at Trohanny Cottage, near Moynalty.
The book delves into the farmstead’s history from the 1800s, the lives of its occupants, the authentic restoration in the 2000s, and its current status as a listed historic building and cherished family home.
In 2000, Áine and her late husband acquired the then derelict, pre-famine Irish farmstead. Despite limited funds, they embraced the restoration challenges, driven by a dream to create a home and preserve a piece of Irish history. Life, as it often does, had different plans, but the dream lived on.
Throughout this personal journey, Áine uncovered and documented the rich history of the farmstead and its inhabitants, dating back to the 1800s.
'Tales From an Irish Thatch' is a collection of stories and personal reflections that offers a wonderful glimpse into more than two centuries of life under a thatched roof.
Featuring 70 glossy, full-color personal photographs and historical documents, this paperback book is a perfect choice for anyone interested in Irish vernacular buildings and Irish history. Proceeds from the sale of this book will go towards the preservation of this historic Irish landmark.
Áine has written this book in the hopes of using the funds to go towards the high cost of maintaining the thatched roof of Trohanny Cottage, one of very few intact remaining in the country.
She hopes to also raise awareness on not only the plight of thatched roof custodians in the Republic of Ireland with lack of insurance availabilty and high costs, but to the wonderful Irish history and stories these buildings hold and the importance of protecting them for future generations
Trohanny Cottage is one of only two thatched cottages in the country listed on the prestigious Historic Houses of Ireland group.
